Kew Gardens (4c Galileo – Chelsea Rose, by Desert King) proved all heart when prevailing in a thrilling finish to the Group 2 Long Distance Cup at Ascot.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt was sent off second favourite to the short-priced Stradivarius, who had won his last ten starts, including last year’s renewal. Donnacha O’Brien rode the bay to track the leaders and led approaching the two furlong market, but he was headed a furlong later by his aforementioned rival. Determined, he battled back and stayed on well to lead close home, prevailing by a nose, as they drew five lengths clear of the third horse.

Speaking after the race, the winning trainer said, “Kew Gardens is an incredible horse and it was a great performance. The lads will decide if he stays in training, but I think there is a strong chance that he will.”

It marked a sixth career success for Kew Gardens, who has twice triumphed at the highest level. The son of Galileo was bred by Barronstown Stud out of Group 1 winner Chelsea Rose, who has produced three Stakes horses in total.
