Royal Dornoch (2c Gleneagles – Bridal Dance, by Danehill Dancer) set a new juvenile course record when taking the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket.
Stepping up to a mile for the first time, he was ridden to chase the leader by Wayne Lordan and led approaching the two furlong pole, but was soon headed. Running on well under pressure, he rallied to regain the advantage close home and beat the favourite Kameko by a neck.
Royal Dornoch had previously shown plenty of pace when finishing third in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes over six furlongs at Goodwood. Trained by Aidan O’Brien for Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Mrs John Magnier, he holds an entry in the Vertem Futurity Trophy at the end of the season, as well as next year’s Irish 2,000 Guineas and Epsom Derby.
A 240,000gns yearling purchase, he was bred by Barronstown Stud and is a half-brother to multiple Group winner Hawksmoor and Cherry Hinton Stakes second Magical Fire.
