The Barronstown Stud-bred Matterhorn (4c Raven’s Pass – Tanaghum, by Darshaan) gained his seventh win from ten starts when running out an impressive winner of the Middle Distance All-Weather Championship worth £125,000.
Racing over ten furlongs at Lingfield, the Mark Johnston-trained colt tracked the leader under Joe Fanning and cruised into the lead two furlongs from home. Quickening well when asked, he was pushed out to win by seven lengths with minimum fuss.
Adding to the impressive nature of his win was the runner-up, the favourite Wissahickon, who came into the race unbeaten on his last five starts, including an impressive win in the Cambridgeshire Handicap and three Stakes races.
Owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Matterhorn is a half-brother to three Stakes horses out of the Listed-placed mare Tanaghum. Also known as the granddam of champion miler Ribchester, she herself is a daughter of Irish Classic winner Mehthaaf.
