The Ralph Beckett-trained Simple Verse (4f Duke Of Marmalade – Guantanamera, by Sadler’s Wells) overcame trouble in running to win the Group 2 Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster.
A dual Group 1 winner as a three-year-old, she returned with a fine second in the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes and followed up with a respectable fourth behind Postponed in the Coronation Cup at Epsom.
Regular partner Oisin Murphy held the bay up at the back of the field and began to make headway over two furlongs out, but was forced to switch right inside the final furlong. Racing home strongly, she led in the final strides to deny Pretty Perfect on the line, the front pair finishing five lengths clear of the third.
It marked a fourth Group success and sixth win overall for Simple Verse, who was sold by breeders Barronstown Stud at the Goffs Orby Sale for €240,000 to David Redvers. She is closely-related to Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes heroine Even Song.
